Situation Reports

Each month, we report on the state of the information ecosystem in the previous month as it relates to politics, media, and the broader state of democracy.  Our goal is to enhance collective understanding of the stable and dynamic dimensions of the Canadian information ecosystem (CIE), articulate its vulnerabilities, and characterize current and emerging information threats.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Situation Reports are now interactive

Our monthly situation reports now consist of a 2-page report featuring our key findings and a monthly snapshot. The remainder of our measures have moved into an Interactive Dashboard, which we invite you to explore:

On the dashboard, you can engage with the data we gather for all measures previously included in the Situation Reports; and you can see the changes to our information ecosystem over time (instead of just month to month).

We want your feedback!

Since we’re reamping our Situation Reports, we want to know what you think about the content we share and how it’s presented. We’d like to also better understand how you - our readers - are using our research, and how we can better meet your needs. Your feedback will play a significant role in shaping the evolution of our reports.

ABOUT THE REPORTS

As the information ecosystem continues to grow in scale, scope and complexity, we aim to continuously improve our collective understanding of its current and evolving nature. Specifically, our goal is to characterize the current state of the ecosystem, assess its health, and identify existing and potential information vulnerabilities and threats that could disrupt it.

Every month we publish a Situation Report that aims to provide these insights as it relates to politics, media and the broader state of democracy. As outlined in our methodology, we do so by monitoring and analyzing the ecosystem through ongoing social media analysis, a monthly tracking survey, and media monitoring. Through these three approaches, we generate situation reports which characterize system health through vulnerability and threats, and the state of political and media engagement. These reports are short, concise, and accessible visual depictions of the information ecosystem.

The hope is that our insights will inform audiences across the spectrum including media and journalists, government, non-profit and community based organizations, educators and the general public.
